Cologne Cathedral 2026: Entry Fee, Opening Hours & Tips for your visit
Cologne Cathedral Admission 2026 – What’s Changing
New from July 2026: Tourist visitors to Cologne Cathedral will have to pay an entrance fee. The exact prices are still being determined by the cathedral chapter. Here’s what you should already know:
-
Visitors attending church services and people coming to pray will still enter free of charge
-
Members of the Central Cathedral Construction Association receive free admission
-
Opening hours remain unchanged: daily from 6 AM to 8 PM
-
The tower climb and treasury remain separately ticketed (as before)
The reason: Annual maintenance costs for the UNESCO World Heritage Site amount to €16 million and can no longer be covered without independent revenue.
Opening Hours for Tourists
The cathedral opens daily at 6 AM, but tourist visits are only possible outside church services:
Weekdays: 10 AM to 5 PM
Sundays: 1 PM to 4 PM
Tower hall after evening mass: open until 8 PM
Tip: Visit early in the morning or during the week to avoid large crowds.
Tower Climb – 533 Steps, Incredible Views
Anyone climbing the south tower will be rewarded with a panoramic view over Cologne from a height of 97 meters. On the way up, you’ll pass the famous St. Peter’s Bell (“D’r decke Pitter”), weighing 24 tons — the world’s largest freely swinging church bell.
533 steps via a narrow spiral staircase — good footwear recommended
Open from 9 AM until the afternoon
Bags: maximum size 40×35×15 cm allowed — luggage storage available at Roncalliplatz
